Matador Management Group (MMG) is seeking an experienced literary agent to contribute to its production of contemporary fiction and nonfiction works. Under the supervision of our Senior Literary Agent, the Literary Agent will be responsible for reviewing and evaluating fiction and nonfiction submissions and handling the groundwork for all projects and processes advancing authors' journeys with MMG and their overall careers.

This is a remote position requiring a self-governing professional and will be evaluated on the basis of targets met, rather than time spent. The perfect candidate for this position is an experienced professional able to deliver before deadlines and with minimal supervision.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred
  • Two (2) years of experience in a publishing house or literary agency
  • Demonstrable interest in books and the publishing industry
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with traditional publishing and popular titles in circulation
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies
  • Problem-solving skills: the ability to convert difficulties with clients into solutions
  • Proficiency with modern office equipment and software: word and document processing, spreadsheet usage, presentation software, email, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for meetings with prospective and existing clients where necessary

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand and implement MMG culture and philosophy
  • Review email queries from prospective authors, respond to rejected queries and request additional materials where necessary
  • Assess manuscripts for suitability and publishing fit
  • Conduct market research on the specific preferences and desires of our niche of readers
  • Keep abreast of trends and developments in the media and publishing industry
  • Explain contracts to clients/authors and answer questions regarding publishing contracts
  • Suggest editorial changes to authors and work with them on said changes as approved
  • Provide authors with support, guidance and encouragement
  • Keep management periodically updated on the statuses of all author's active projects
  • Concurrently managing the workflows of multiple authors
  • Understanding and adhering to copyright and privacy laws and regulations for all jurisdictions in which we operate

A minimum of two years’ experience in the field is required for eligibility.
